SERVING THE YOUTH IN OUR COMMUNITY FOR 80 YEARS
Howick Sea Scouts was first opened in 1940 in the heart of Howick. It was then re-opened in 2007 comprising of a single cub pack. In 2012 Howick flourished into a Kea group, two Cub packs and a Scout group. The group takes part in many activities throughout the year including the Zone Kea Sleepover, Kea Day, Zone Cub Camp, Cub day, Scout Jamboree and many many more.
Howick Sea Scouts have a fantastic group of leaders who pride themselves on teamwork and providing the best programme for the children. Being Sea Scouts we spend a lot of time on the water kayaking, sailing and swimming. We have 3 Cutters that are used for sailing & rowing, 2 RS Fevas which are used for sailing, over 25 Kayaks, 2 Rafts used for Zone Raft Races and 2 Patrol Boats to keep us safe when on the water.
We teach kids basic life skills, survival skills, boating skills and maritime knowledge. We like to have a lot of fun and make the night very enjoyable for the kids but safety in our number one priority. Not only do we teach boating and life skills but we also do hands on activities like the Pinewood Derby, where each child is given 4 wheels and a piece of wood and have to modify it to make it go faster and look unique when going down the 20 meter track. Another hands on activity we do is Fire Making, we send the kids of to collect fire wood (dead wood) and kindling so they can start their fire and make it burn safely and efficiently.
